Getting Out of Your Element

As a follow-up to my blog on Getting Out of Your Element - in case you didn't see the season finale of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE - a surprise "dance super-star" stepped in to replace Alex Wong as a tribute to his performance (since he was injured).

This. Is. Priceless.

And truly, 100% defines, getting out of your element:

__________________________________________________

I know it's hard to sometimes break from the norm - to try something new that might be difficult - and to never give up, when what you're facing is so far out of your element, it's not even funny.

If you aren't a fan of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), you might just be after seeing this video clip.

Alex is currently competing for this year's title and is a classically trained ballet dancer - and he's absolutely amazing to watch in his natural surroundings.  However, what would the show be, if they didn't shake things up a bit?  This week, Alex was paired up with All-Star season 4 - 2nd place finisher, tWitch - who just so happens to specialize in freestyle / hip hop dancing.

Performing what's known as a Nappytabs hip hop choreographed routine, watch what it truly means, to be out of your element...and what happens, when you actually realize, that you can do anything.

UPDATE
:  Because of copy right issues, YouTube has been either pulling down all videos or trying to request that the videos only be viewable on YouTube itself (no embedded links allowed).  The link below may or may not work - so if it doesn't, just click on the link in the middle of the YouTube screen below, and it will direct you to the clip.  You can also click on this link, to go directly there YouTube - and you can search by Alex Wong and tWitch for all videos.  Sorry for the run around!

NEW: Here is the link to watch Alex perform what is considered, more his "element"...it's absolutely beautiful to watch:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHiwmZj1Wbc

UPDATE 7.12: So if any of you are fans of SYTYCD, you know by now, that Alex suffered a major injury to his ACL last week.  As a result, he was automatically placed in the bottom 3 for last week's show, and subsequently, released from the show since his injury will require surgery and months to heal.  What devastating news for someone that would've won it all!  I'm not sure what higher entity keeps pushing Alex away from performing on this show (he was forced to drop out last year, since he wasn't allowed to break his contract with the Miami City Ballet) - but hopefully he will return again next year to take the title that is so well deserved.

From season 7, week 3.

10 Random Things About Me for the Month of July...

random facts Pictures, Images and Photos
I can't believe it's actually July - where, oh where, has the year gone?  So to start the month off right - here are 10 random things about me, for the month of July!

1.  I have a 115 lb. German Shepherd named Ronin, who's ears I firmly believe, give me better cell phone reception.

I also have the Antichrist reincarnated into a cat with black fur and a bottle brush tail - her name is Chewbacca or Chewy for short.  Yeah, I dare you to pet her...try it.

And lastly, I have a black and white tuxedo cat named Tuck, who quite honestly, is one of the best cats I've ever known.

Oh, did I mention I'm allergic to cats?  Sadly, I haven't been able to breathe through my nose in almost 11 years.

2.  My very first job was working at Safeway, bagging groceries, at the age of 14.  I will forever be grateful for learning how to pack perfectly - and now I'm actually obsessed with finding the perfect home for everything, when I do pack.  It's a sickness...I know.

3.  I was in gymnastics for more than 12 years and firmly thought I was going to be the next Olga Korbut.  My favorite apparatus was the uneven bars.

Me on the uneven bars - I believe I was 3 years old (with my sister in the background staring at my cute instructor!):

Olga Korbut on the uneven bars circa 1976 Olympics:

I know, the resemblance is uncanny isn't it?  HA!

4.  I played the classical violin for 14 years - at first it was because my Mom made me...but now, I'm so glad she did.

5.
I love to travel!  I'm the daughter of a retired commercial airline pilot and my brother is both a Captain in the Air Force as well as a pilot for Alaska Airlines...but sadly, I am afraid to fly!  If I could click my heels together and just get there, I would - and let's just say that teleportation would be one of my all-time favorite super powers to have.

Some of my favorite destinations, thus far:

Italy:

(Clockwise from L to R) Pictures I took of Vatican City, Venice, the volcanic mountains of Pompei, and The Colosseum in Rome.
Machu Picchu, Peru:

Chichen Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico:

Antigua, Guatemala:

6.
From the above, I think it's safe to say that I also have a huge passion for photography!
7.  I traveled all throughout Central and South America for over 10 years, yet I don't speak Spanish.  But I can order a mean quesadilla and dos cervezas por favor!
8.   I have two cell phones - one for business and one for personal - and I work in the marketing department for a cell phone company...yet sadly, I probably know how to use maybe 10% of the cool functions that either of them can do:

9.  I am just getting back into training, so that I can run a Half Marathon next year.  Yes, I'm waaaay out of shape and have a long way to go - but that's the plan.

Paula Radcliffe better watch out...

10.  I miss my Mom, every single day

So there you have it!  10 more random things about me, covering the month of July!
Until next month...
